Zone 6, Agege (feat. Franz Von & Gyedu-Blay Ambolley)

Helmed by producers Tom Excell and GUTS, rapper/singer’s K.O.G’s Zone 6, Agege is both a tribute to his musical roots and a conversation between sounds of the Black Atlantic. A melting pot for a broad range of musical languages, the musician’s first solo album under Heavenly Sweetness seeks to capture the energy and environment of his upbringing in coastal Accra. With its fusion of traditional African rhythms and contemporary sonic influences, elements of soukouss, Afrobeat and highlife rub against jazz, funk and soul. Anchored by incisive lyricism delivered in English, Pidgin and Ga, K.O.G’s engagement with hip-hop is brought to the fore on the groovy “Ayinye” while dub/reggae anchors “Spirits”. With its steel pans, chants and African guitars, “No Way”, which features the legendary Gyédu Blay Ambolley, ties together the project’s exploration of the past, present and future.
