Joining bands like Clean Bandit at the cutting edge of 21st-century electronic pop, the UK trio Years & Years infuse vintage dance music with offbeat indie rock style. On one level, their fourth EP, Y&Y, is deliciously retro. “Desire” is built around an infectious piano-driven beat that’s pure ’90s house music, and “King” even slyly quotes Madonna’s disco-goes-tropical smash “La Isla Bonita.” At the same time, we love how thrillingly modern Y&Y feels. Driven by the passionate, R&B-inspired vocals of frontman Olly Alexander, these four songs blur the lines between club-ready EDM, pure pop thrills, and subtly experimental electronica. We picked Years & Years for our 2015 New Artist Spotlight.
