Who We Are - EP

Weathering the loss of lead singer Lacey Sturm in 2012, Flyleaf turns a new page with the release of a five-song EP featuring new vocalist Kristen May. Who We Are reaffirms the band’s core values: honest testimony grappling with real-life issues, delivered with a bold metal-tipped attack that doesn’t stint on melody or dynamics. Filling Sturm’s shoes isn’t an easy assignment, but May (formerly with Kansas City indie rockers Vedera) rises to the occasion by asserting her own identity rather than imitating her predecessor. In tandem with P.O.D.’s Sonny Sandoval, she commands the spotlight on the anthemic “Something Better,” a studio track infused with positive spirit and a catchy pop sensibility. The remaining four cuts on Who We Are offer live takes on some Flyleaf classics. Dipping into tunes from the New Horizons album, May tears into the churning “Call You Out,” infuses “Fire Fire” with urgency, and turns up her vibrato for the aching “Broken Wings.” “Sorrow”—a tune from Flyleaf’s debut album—closes the EP on a grand note of renewal.
