Matthew Squires writes and sings songs with such natural appeal that it sounds like it’s easy to do. Since 2012, the Austin-based Squires and his band The Learning Disorders have been refining their craft with each successive album. Squires improves as a vocalist here, evoking the innocence of Jonathan Richman while expressing his own emotional truths. “Devotional #2” is tight power pop where he’s unnerved by the idea that “nothing lasts forever.” The title track lets the band show off their honky-tonk side, whereas they capture the simplicity of a garage band on the openhearted “Plato’s Cave.” Squires races through history on “When Moses Sighed.”
