10 Songs, 34 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Jason Derülo has jumped headfirst into the world of contemporary R&B with a swagger and a keen understanding of pop-song dynamics like a man in it for the long run. His singles "Whatcha Say" and "In My Head" spin his pleading vocals against club atmospherics and stripped-down, post-808s & Heartbreak minimalism. He also shows a knack for self-promotion that can't be disputed.

A Decent Debut Album

Derulo displays his impresseive vocal skills on a number of these tracks. Though, I will admit that it wasn't quite what I expected after the releases of "Whatcha Say" and "In My Head." I wish there were a few more tracks with heavy beats, but it's his first effort. Almost seems like every pop artist needs to stray into RnB these days and sing repeatly about there struggles with relationships.

Derulo Debut

Although this album is not particularly innovative and consists of lots of autotune, Jason successfully caters to the mainstream audience. Most of the songs do not deviate from the typical autotuning hip-hop/pop formula, but they are still pretty good. Hopefully Jason will learn to use less autotune as his career advances. For a debut album, Jason has done a very good job. He is no one-hit-wonder and will continue to impress audiences with his powerful vocals.
