EDITORS’ NOTES

Named for the Japanese word for “eyelid”, Mabuta is the brainchild of prominent Cape Town jazz bassist, composer and producer Shane Cooper. This innovative new quintet is made up of young musicians—Bokani Dyer (piano/synth), Marlon Witbooi (drums), Sisonke Xonti (tenor sax) and Robin Fassie-Kock (trumpet)—and aims to redefine the interplay between jazz and electronic music. The result, Welcome To This World, is a dreamlike odyssey of jazz soirees charged with Malian, Moroccan and Nigerian rhythms and an irrepressible sense of exploration.
