A three-man group from Sioux Falls, S.D., Soulcrate Music (DJ Absolute plus brothers Dirt Dee and Attention Def) hit the scene in the mid-'00s, self-releasing its first album, Obviously Bothered, in 2004. Clearly influenced by Midwestern indie-rap acts like Atmosphere, Soulcrate amassed a strong local following thanks to quality beatwork, positive wordplay, and relentless hustling. More hip-hop heads around the country started to take notice after 2010's The Heartland Panic, and the group's reputation spread thanks to relentless touring and some seriously high-profile stage-sharing. Welcome Back from Wherever (Soulcrate's fifth full-length) is arguably its best effort to date, loaded with deep lyricism, bombastic production, and catchy hooks that stick in your ears for days. Highly recommended for fans of Macklemore, Rhymesayers, and the like. Check out "Monsters," "Shot in the Dark" (with Grieves), "In the Air," and the neck-breaking "Pulling Me Back."
