We Got a Love

We Got a Love

2010’s From the Cradle to the Rave proved that Shit Robot (a.k.a. Marcus Lambkin) had what it took to pull together the sounds that made James Murphy’s DFA empire the empire it became. This follow-up is exactly what fans expect. Lambkin’s love for late-'80s house is in full evidence, and suggestions that he’s never heard a sound past 1992 that he could love seems about right. He appears to be saying that innovation is okay for some—but if you rush too quickly to the next big thing, you miss out on where the music could go otherwise. By working within certain arbitrary limitations, Lambkin pulls out his own surprises. Reggie Watts plays it straight for the near-seven-minute opener, “The Secret” (and for the more-to-the point title track), but it’s LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang who enjoys the trip down memory lane on “Do That Dance,” while The Rapture’s Luke Jenner taps his inner Bee Gees for “Feels Real”; it sounds perfect for an imagined Saturday Night Fever II: The Late ‘80s sequel.
