gifted peers, but The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 1 finds him in a pared-down trio setting, playing mainly ballad standards with two older master musicians: pianist George Cables (mid-seventies) and bassist Peter Washington (mid-fifties). Pelt, nearing his mid-forties at this point, has matured into the kind of player who can pull this off: a restrained, intimate setting without drums, reminiscent of nights at the celebrated Lower Manhattan club Bradley’s back in the day. Cables was among the elite piano greats who performed there, and his playing here is undimmed, big in sound, and effortless in swing.
\nAfter Pelt’s own “Love Is Simple” leads off, the trio takes up standard repertoire and does it just right on “Little Girl Blue,” “Then I’ll Be Tired of You,” and “Always on My Mind” (the one by Green and Newell, not to be confused with Willie Nelson’s hit). “While You Are Gone,” by the unheralded bop tenorist Lucky Thompson, is an unexpected ballad gem. Pelt and his band — tenor saxophonist J. D. Allen, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Gerald Cleaver — inventively update the sound of Miles Davis’s extraordinary quintet from the 1960s, but the album doesn’t come off as a retro move; it’s too engaged and engaging in a here-and-now sort of way. Pelt wrote and arranged all of the material on this 2008 release (“Nephthys” is a particularly striking example of his compositional abilities). November opens with “Mata,” a free-time piece that evokes the sound of classic Coltrane and features the percussion of guest Jeff Haynes. Throughout the album the rhythm section sounds great, as they consistently create complex, yet lucid, rhythmic backdrops. Both Grissett and Allen bring to mind their Davis quintet analogues — pianist Herbie Hancock and saxophonist Wayne Shorter — but their solos display distinctive voices. (The opening track, “Second Love,” immediately evokes the compositions that Wayne Shorter wrote for Davis’ group.) Pelt has an amazingly pure tone, and his playing is superb throughout. The band members—tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Gerald Cleaver—have clearly spent a lot of time playing together. They're excellent soloists, and every note feels both fluid and considered. The two non-originals here are pleasing. Guest vocalist Joanna Pascale does a nice job on Sammy Cahn’s “Moondrift,” where the band provides sensitive accompaniment, and there’s a nicely rendered version of George Cables’ “Sweet Rita Suite Part 2: Her Soul,” which features a muted trumpet statement.
