10 Songs, 42 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Along with fellow Midwesterners Uncle Tupelo, Minneapolis' Jayhawks heralded a resurgent interest in a music style that became known variously as Americana, insurgent country, and alt-country. The Jayhawks' magic resides in the sweetly incandescent harmonies of songwriters Mark Olson and Gary Louris, which elevate the band's sound above its lovely but basic song structures. Hollywood Town Hall features pretty, twangy songs that consistently deliver, especially on the lovely tunes "Waiting for the Sun," "Settled Down Like Rain," and "Take Me With You When You Go." Olson would leave the band after one more record, and while Louris stayed on after his departure to make three more Jayhawks albums, Hollywood Town Hall remains their musical pinnacle.
