V (Deluxe Version)

Unearthly Trance's fifth studio album arrived just in time to commemorate the Long Island doom rock trio’s 10-year anniversary. V recalls the band’s early penchant for filth-caked sludge rock played at ear-damaging volumes (the tempos have become gradually faster with each release). That’s not to say songs like the lumbering opener, “Unveiled,” play as if Unearthly Trance is backpedaling. Mixed in with exaggerated Sabbath-esque riffs is innovative production via Sanford Parker (Pelican, Nachtmystium, Lair of the Minotaur) that has more in common with the ambient death metal of Wolves in the Throne Room. Also, frontman/guitarist Rion Lipynsky’s larynx-grating screams sound crafted to match the allocated explosions from his guitar—as if he purposefully built a call-and-response relationship between the voice from his throat and the voice from his hands. “Adversaries Mask 1” displays a dynamic versatility as a somber fingerpicked tune slowly builds into a sonic hurricane that seeps into the song’s feral companion, “Adversaries Mask 2.”
