The original lineup of Jane’s Addiction released only three albums between 1987 and 1990, yet distilling the alt-rock legends’ stylistic innovations into a single best-of disc still presents a formidable challenge. Up from the Catacombs foregrounds mosh-pit perennials like “Stop” and “Ocean Size” before showcasing the band’s fearless eclecticism: the cheeky jangle-pop shuffles (“Been Caught Stealing”), the imposing psych-rock epics (“Three Days”), the strung-out ballads (“Jane Says”). The 2003 single “Just Because” shows they emerged from their breakup with their irreverent spirit intact.
