Unstoppable International

The fourth album by the legendary Innocent Ujah Idibia, The Unstoppable (International Edition) represented somewhat of a rebirth for 2Baba (formerly known as 2Face Idibia). “Unstoppable was my first project under my newly formed independent label and an interesting experience,” he tells Apple Music. “It was a mixture of excitement and anxiety, and I just put all those emotions into the making of this album.” As a follow-up to the previous The Unstoppable, the International Edition balanced sonic elements from various genres, including Afropop, soul, reggae, R&B, and rock. Resonating with audiences and critics alike, the LP would go on to clinch two Soundcity Music Video Awards for “Enter the Place,” MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Male and Artist of the Year in 2010, a 2011 Headies Award for Best Pop/R&B Album, and a Best International Act BET Award in 2011. With a sense of redemption anchoring this offering, heartfelt album opener “Oh Papa” foreshadows an intimate listening experience that delves into the innermost thoughts and feelings of the artist. Marrying lessons learned from his personal journey with a broader social outlook, 2Baba folded relatable messages into his melodic lyricism. Ideals of justice and hope animate the standout song “Only Me”—a thematic companion piece to the patriotic “Power of Naija.” The reggae-infused “Raindrops” perfectly embodies the LP’s advisory undertones while “See It Coming” uses its Caribbean production to advocate for pan-African unity. The pop rock of both “Be There” and “Emotions” addresses romance, and the infectious “Implication” epitomizes 2Baba’s knack for crafting earworms. The song’s runaway success was an extension of the project’s, and it proved that 2Baba was a force to be reckoned with despite his previous trials and tribulations.
