33 Songs, 2 Hours 14 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

No band in the '90s was better set for recording an “Unplugged” performance for the MTV cameras than R.E.M. They'd built their legacy with the kind of ensemble playing that works as both electric rock and acoustic folk. As huge fans of music from the ‘60s, R.E.M. wrote their songs on guitars or pianos. This collection includes—for the first time ever—both of R.E.M.’s performances on MTV’s popular “Unplugged” series, from 1991 and 2001. The album includes every performance from the original broadcasts, as well as 11 songs that never aired. Hits such as “Fall on Me,” “Losing My Religion,” “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine),” and “The One I Love” retain the magic that made them hits, but they appear here with a gentle undertow that sweetens the harmonies and gives singer Michael Stipe less room to hide and more room to emote. A younger Stipe might have panicked, but by the time of these performances he was a seasoned vocalist who knew how to hold a room.

Amazing Band and VERY Missed!

This is one of the best Unplugged releases I have ever been lucky enough to hear. R.E.M. is an amazing group of Artists that wrote a lot of amazing music relevant to the times. Unfortunately bands with a purpose or meaning run their course and then go their separate ways. I am so impressed with this Unplugged compilation and recommend it to anyone who wants to find the true R.E.M. meaning.

Epic

I remember the evening, I remember the room I was in when REM’s first Unplugged appearance aired in 1991, I even remember who was with me in front of the TV. What an epic performance, cementing their place as America’s best band. Which, by the way, hasn’t changed.

Thank you

I bought every R.E.M. CD after hearing "Out of Mind" during my freshmen year of college at Ohio University. That album and that band had such an incredible influence on me -- immediately. I bought this acoustic album today, and I felt the same as I did 20 years ago. I guess that's what they mean by timeless music. GREAT album. You should part with the 20 bucks and download it right now.
