This collection of two undated live performances from 1972 is a true rarity in the vast Sun Ra catalog—issued in two small vinyl runs with different covers, it hasn't previously been reissued digitally or on CD. It was recorded to cassette (probably in July during the band’s Monday-night run at Slug’s around this time) using a microphone set on each side the stage. The sound is often surprisingly robust considering the circumstances. The soulful and bluesy “Universe in Blue” kicks things off featuring the bandleader on “Intergalactic Space Organ” and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore while the rest of the band lays back. From the same tape, the previously unreleased “Calling Planet Earth—We’ll Wait for You” follows with everyone coming to the stage for a suite of mischief and mayhem. June Tyson sounds positively soulful on “When the Black Man Ruled This Land.” Despite the excellent remastering using 24-bit transfers throughout, the horrible sound quality of the jumping “Another Shade of Blue” is saved by the fact that it’s the band in full flight. Worth owning, though not the place to start.
