11 Songs, 42 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

While Turn Out the Lights might trek similar terrain as Julien Baker’s breakthrough, Sprained Ankle, there’s something about it that’s immediately colder and more haunting. “Nobody’s worried about me,” the Nashville singer/songwriter muses on the devastating “Sour Breath.” Yet there’s catharsis on “Televangelist” when Baker vows to resolve her own torment, using chilling piano chords and ghostly backing vocals to amplify her stance. On the ballad-like closer, “Claws in Your Back,” Baker tries to find peace (“I think I can love...I’d take it all back”), confessing her deepest regrets and taking a bold step toward the light.

Can't get enough

Pure genius. I could listen to her for hours. Great CD, even better than the last, and to me that's hard to do. Love it.

A meaningful voice in a time of meaningless music

On the verge of legend and she’s just getting started. This is a beautiful and haunting record. A nighttime drive masterpiece. Looking forward to everything Julien releases. Cheers to music with meaning and purpose.
