EDITORS’ NOTES

Big in the Bay though relatively unknown elsewhere, Oakland emcee Philthy Rich has been on his grind for years now, churning out mixtapes, albums, and DVDs at a crazy pace and collaborating with pretty much every local artist imaginable. He’s dropped more than 20 projects since 2007, and he's aligned himself with local powerhouses Town Thizzness, Livewire Records, and SMC. On Hood Rich 3, he connects with DJ Racks for 21 tracks about living that street life ("I Be on the Turf," "Glock on Me") and tearing up the club ("Rockin in the Club"). Guest verses come courtesy of Messy Marv, Stevie Joe, Shady Nate, E-40, Jackie Chan, and Fetti Mac, though it's Philthy himself who impresses the most, with his charismatic flow and over-the-top wordplay. As he aims to rise to the top of an extremely crowded scene, this is a step in the right direction, and it'll appeal to anybody down with thugged-out but melodic hip-hop repping for the Bay.
