Ten Bulls

Autechre requires an audience with a refined ear. This album simply was not meant for the casual listener. Indicative of all Autechre's tracks, the soundscapes and beats are sparse, at times barren. You hear only what is required. You will not hear extraneous noise and needless samples. Minimalist electronic music by nature is uncluttered.

Picasso painted a series of portraits entitled Ten Bulls. The first was an acurate representation of the entirety of the animal. In each subsequent depiction less of the bull was present. The tenth bull was only horns, testicles, and tail. However the tenth bull when viewed independently of the other nine, was still clearly a bull. Autechre is that tenth bull.

Autechre's Masterpiece Era (95-98)

Tri Repetae rises above all other Warp productions of the era as the single greatest testament to the expansive and experimental electronic sounds of the decade. The album spans the duo's more approachable efforts like Amber to a more daring sound that would come to define their curriculum vitae. Songs 1-4 bring the listener along from their previous efforts before rising into the middle of the album marked by more aggressive rhythms that will carry over into Chiastic Slide, the other great offering of their 90s era. 5-7 are perfectly paced and the gem of the album, Eutow, haunts the listener, standing out as one of Autechre's greatest individual songs.
