11 Songs, 38 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

George Lewis Jr.’s third album as Twin Shadow is a series of musical fist-pumps, each one bigger and more triumphant than the last. Tracing a line from fun. to Drake to The Killers and back through the finish-line anthems of Pretty in Pink or The Karate Kid, the album is by turns bombastic and seductive. It's part power ballad ("To the Top") and part slow jam ("Alone”)—a heavy machine built out of leather and chrome. The flourishes are modern, but the foundation is pure '80s.

Seriously awesome

Big production, big adventurous sound. Influences from 70s all the way up to modern but has a unique sound. Twin Shadow has pulled those influences into the modern world and executed it wonderfully. Love the mesh of electronic with rock, it's very much an anthemic and iconic album, got a feeling this is going to be big.

Lewis sings with the angst and the subtleties that you get from classic artists, dynamic and interesting range. There's plenty of complexity in the production as well, the beats are absolutely banging to put it more crudely.

Disappointing to say the least...

I've been a fan for many years and was extremely hyped for this new record. After months and months of being teased with awesome singles like, "Old Love / New Love", "To The Top" and "Turn Me Up" I couldn't wait any longer. Finally, the album gets released and let me tell you it has absolutely no weight. Out of the whole record, there is probably 5 good songs namely the above as well as "I'm Ready" and "When The Lights Go Out" - I don't generally write reviews but I felt so disappointed in this release. Definitely does not hold up to Confess or Forget. Those albums are on a completely different universe it seems. Although I must say that I loved his 90's influence with this album, I wish he pushed it a little further. With those five songs I listed he could of had another smash on his hands. Oh well, we shall see what George comes up with next.
