This Warm December, A Brushfire Holiday, Vol. 2

Leave it to surfing songsmith Jack Johnson and his impressive roster of Brushfire bards to help us stay cozy during the cold winter season. This Warm December is the second installment in Brushfire Records’ holiday compilations. It opens with ALO’s Zach Gill crooning in his throaty baritone over a playful ukulele as a rootsy banjo and parlor piano join a brushed drumkit and melodica. It sounds like an intimate living-room jam. Later, Rogue Wave indie-fies “Jingle Bell Rock” with Zach Rogue singing through gallons of reverb as his band plays slide guitar and sleigh bells. Mojave 3/Slowdive frontman Neil Halstead’s “Home for Christmas” is the star on this tree. His whisper-sung harmonies hover over a warbling Hammond B3 organ as nylon-string guitars pluck and strum underneath him with warm, organic tones. Of course the party’s host, Jack Johnson, comes through with two tracks: first the hushed, beachy folk-rock tune “In the Morning” and then “Angel (Holiday),” a two-minute love song with an everlasting sentiment.
