As a fan of Carpenter's 1982 movie, I can honestly say that this soundtrack is nothing short of awesome! Beltrami has finally outdone himself.

Surprisingly awesome

Beltrami does a wonderul job of capturing the same dread and hopelessness of Morricone's score, but makes it completely his own. I was so impressed with this soundtrack, because I truly didn't expect it to hold a candle to Morricone. It exceeded all my expectations. What stood out the most to me, is that the score has actual 'themes', which I didn't expect. A welcome surprise and one of my top 5 soundtracks of the year.

No pun intended, this score is the sign of a composer that understands how to pay homage without redundant imitation. And, in fact, much of the quieter tracks simply mirrors the intention of the original Morricone score: to capture the weather of the desolate forever-winter. There's even a touch of James Newton Howard here, I believe. But there's a pleasant blend of contemporary and classic horror.
