The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection - EP

Taylor Swift's six-song Holiday EP is a class act. Originally released in October 2007 as an exclusive-only available at participating Target stores in America, The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection was re-released for wider distribution in December 2008. Rather than open with a traditional carol, Swift starts the party with a playful version of "Last Christmas," originally penned by George Michael as a double a-sided 45 rpm single for his British pop duo Wham! in 1984. Christmas bells and banjos replace synthesizers and falsettos making for a fitting update. She gets more pensive and lovelorn on the following acoustic ballad "Christmases When You Were Mine," one of two songs here that she had a hand in writing. "Santa Baby" gets twanged up and sung with a girlish tone that comes off more innocent than the flirty versions by Eartha Kitt and Madonna. Swift changes Franz Xaver Gruber's 1863 melody on a breathtaking version of "Silent Night," leaving Josef Mohr's lyrics intact making for what sounds like a brand new, but familiar, song. "Christmas Must Be Something More" is a holiday hit. Her sole original here, the song bounces with the youthful exuberance and barbed hooks that Swift excels at writing and singing.
