13 Songs, 53 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

There's no question that Austin singer/guitarist Gary Clark Jr. can shred with the best of them. But on his second major-label full-length, it's his restraint that's his trump card. He gently dabs the minimalist blues-rocker "The Healing" with little more than a B.B. King-style riff and a poker-hot vocal, keeping the song gorgeously unfussy. Just as expressive is the stomping "Grinder," which features a literally screaming guitar lick that mimics the line it follows: "My baby's crying/So now my baby's crying.”

Much Needed

This guy is just what modern music has greatly needed. A guitar based musician with a throwback style, who’s isn’t pigeon holed or stereo typical. This type of blues tinged rock and roll has a timeless sound that pays homage to all the greats while it forges ahead on its own two feet. Thanks Gary! This one sounds like it will be right in line with your stellar debut.

in for a penny...

... in for a pound. GCjr is fresh, present, real and honorary. He acknowledges the roots and forges the future. Rare is the artist that rings true outside the stresses and pulls of the marketplace but he shines through to the challenge. And live? the proof is clicks away. Need a non-obvious reference? Think Shuggie Otis in the 21st century. Go Gary go: Hearts and ears, Souls and years of faithful followers are listening in joint rapture as the muse flows through you.

Disappointed..

I was very excited to get this album and song after song I got very disappointed. If you like his last live album Gary took this album in completely different direction. It's overproduced pop RnB and it sounds like Usher. He may win another Grammy but not blues fans. I'm very disappointed and give 2stars only for tracks 11 and 12 witch I think sound more like him. I hope to hear more guitar and blues in the future.
