Bauhaus' 1980 debut is widely credited as the album that launched gothic rock. Its angular post-punk guitars, horror-movie-inspired vocals and atmospheres, darkly romantic trills, and showy glam riffs laid the foundation for the genre. Peter Murphy's haunting baritone is a perfect foil for David J’s bass and Daniel Ash's apocalyptic guitar on gloomy goth-club classics "Dark Entries" and "Stigmata Martyr," while the off-kilter rhythms and carnival-esque palette of "St. Vitus Dance" and "Double Dare" show a band in the delirious throes of experimentation.
