After emerging from Los Angeles neighborhood of Silver Lake, Silversun Pickups have released a handful of solid albums that draw from the hefty ambient electronics of My Bloody Valentine, the subtle guitar shadings of Mission of Burma, Sonic Youth, and Wire, and the shameless pop hooks of Superchunk and Foo Fighters. The Singles Collection features 10 previously issued singles, plus the brand-new bonus track “Cannibal,” which affirm the group's greatness in the way that only carefully sculpted singles can do. The long-running quartet make it look easy, and their success has caused some potential fans to lump them in with less deserving, trend-hopping groups. Yet songs like “Kissing Families,” “Lazy Eye,” “Panic Switch,” and “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)” prove that Silversun Pickups have consistently understood the importance of a strong single. From their earliest work to their latest, they stay true to hard, melodic pop rock. If one were looking for a quick summary of the band, this would be a smart place to check in. However, don’t be surprised if your curiosity is suddenly piqued to check out 2005’s Pikul EP and the three subsequent studio albums.
