Thematically the songs may cover familiar pop territory—living for the moment and forgetting your worries in “4Ever,” leaving a controlling lover in “Everything I’m Not”—but they send a clear message: The Veronicas, aka Queensland-born twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, are ready to play in pop’s major leagues. Everything about The Secret Life of... is heightened, be it the angst and emotion of power ballad “Mouth Shut,” the breathless ode to love that is the string-laden “Speechless,” or the sheer pop-punk adrenaline rush of explosive ear worms “Revolution” and “Secret.” Binding them together is the quality of the songwriting, the twins co-writing with songwriters like Billy Steinberg (Madonna, Whitney Houston), Kara DioGuardi (Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson), and Chantal Kreviazuk (Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani) to concoct a Zeitgeist-seizing slice of pure guitar-driven pop magic.
