The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk - Single

While Gord Downie’s previous posthumous releases—2017’s Introduce Yourself and 2020’s Away Is Mine—were atmospheric, introspective affairs written in the wake of his cancer diagnosis, the circumstances behind these unearthed tracks couldn’t be more different. Their origins date back to the 2000s, when the Hip recorded a pair of albums with superproducer Bob Rock, who then asked Downie to contribute lyrics to some music he was making on the side with a cast of session musicians. The brassy buoyancy and moonlit sheen of Rock’s arrangements lent the recordings a decidedly different character than both the Hip’s ragged rock and Downie’s more experimental solo efforts, and this three-song teaser provides a snapshot of just how much ground they cover: “The Raven and the Red-Tailed Hawk” is an urgent, fleet-footed anthem that harkens back to the mid-2000s golden age of Canadian indie-rock collectives; “Lustre Parfait” is a rousing heartland shack-shaker that evokes Springsteen’s ’80s glory days; and “Is There Nowhere” is an impassioned power ballad that feels like a wind-battered Canuck cousin to U2’s “One.”
