His penchant for powerful rock and pop reinventions serves him well: Iconic songs by Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon take on new urgency and beauty here. Timeless gems by jazz composers Jaco Pastorius and Carla Bley land just as effectively. Coproducer Branford Marsalis and members of his quartet play a key role, as does the outstanding trumpeter Marquis Hill.
