The Love In Between

The Love In Between

Matt Maher broadens his lyric focus (as well as his musical reach) on The Love in Between. What’s different this time is a greater emphasis on the commonplace struggles of ordinary Christians. Maher’s vocals—reminiscent in their lower range of country singer Toby Keith—bring out the gritty details of “Turn Around” (a blue-collar anthem for believers) and add weight to the confessional “Every Little Prison (Deliver Me).” He manages to fill radio-friendly tracks like “Turn Around” and “Woke up in America” with enough muscle and drive to make them more than feel-good affirmations. “On My Way” matches Biblically framed questions with a Southern blues-tinged track, with winning results. The more subdued tunes (especially “My Only Love” and “Everything and Nothing”) are vulnerable and tender. The closing number, “The Spirit and the Bride,” beckons the bruised and confused to find their way to God. Whether he’s rocking out or contemplating in a quiet place, Matt Maher strides forward creatively on this well-realized, Spirit-filled project.
