15 Songs, 50 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Obsessing not just over the usual '60s icons, the New Pornographers have made a career as power-pop favorites by positing that the following decade's hit-makers - Wings, the Cars, Sweet - are equally worthy role models. Twin Cinema, their third album, follows its predecessors' blend of tightly packed hooks and often Dadaist lyrics while tweaking the formula in little ways. Neko Case's vocals, both solo and in support of her bandmates, are typically incandescent; she's joined here by new keyboardist-singer Kathryn Calder. Though the order of the day is usually smashingly upbeat concoctions like "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras" and "Use It," Twin Cinema also excels at wistful balladry such as the Kinks-worthy "Bleeding Heart Show." The band's musical momentum seems likely to grow after this excellent album.

AMAZING album

This is one of the best albums I've heard in a while. In some ways, they have a "wall of sound" like quality. At first, they reminded me of Polyphonic Spree, but they definately have a song all their own. The Bleeding Heart Show, at under 4 and a half minutes, has about 10 brilliant musical ideas. It's a diverse album, with different singers, tempos and moods. I can't recommend it enough.

Album of the Year

Yeah, I know. "Album of the Year." How trite. This album is truly worthy of this trite little verbiage. It's been a very long time since I've been so enthused about something recently written. I live in NC and missed these guys last month. It's my biggest regret of 2005. By this record and play it for everyone you know. They'll thank you just like you'll thank me.

Innovative and crowd-pleasing at the same time

Not only the best album of 2005, but the best album I own. My two little kids (who call them "The New Stenographers") have almost every song memorized because we play them constantly. The Bleeding Heart Show gives me chills every time; and The Jessica Numbers is top on my workout playlist. Total musical innovation, and totally listenable (not an easy feat to manage!).
