EDITORS’ NOTES

Parts of Oddisee’s latest confront Trump’s America: “How you gonna make us great when we were never really all that amazing?” But the DC rapper sees little renewed cause for concern: “I’m from black America/This is just another year,” he raps on “NNGE”. Not that the familiarity of oppression blunts his fight. Over funky, soulful tracks, he addresses the sexism (“Hold It Back”) and police brutality (“You Grew Up”) that stifle his simple hope: “I just wanna be free.”

Hope for Hip Hop

Oddisee evolves with each album...he music makes me nostalgic about how Hip Hop was and optimistic about how great it could still be.

Underrated

This guy is underrated like hell. He should have the spotlight that lil yachty has. It's ridiculous to me that guys like yachty, uzi vert, and 21 savage are more recognized than guys like this. Oddisee would've been dope in the cyphers at the bet awards.

Restores my faith in hip hop

This is the kind of album that restores my faith in hip hop. In place of the usual gangsta, misogynist, money-grabbing schtick, its lyrics veer toward the politic and the personal, which for me is much more interesting and substantive. This is one of the rare hip-hop albums I can listen to over and over and all the way through. Even musically, it sets itself apart by relying more on live-sounding instrumentals (which may in fact be a live band, I don't know). Definitely happy to have stumbled upon it.
