The Greatest of All Traps

The Greatest of All Traps

It’s only 10 seconds into Montana 700’s The Greatest of All Traps that he lays out the stakes for what his new project—and his entire mission as an artist—is all about. Over synths and mesmerizing keys that center the cut as a hype-up anthem, the Texas rapper sets the stage: “I wanted to be a trapper all my life…I knew I was gonna be big.” He spends the rest of the project walking through the highs and lows of the life he chose: leaving the streets to build this rap career, mourning the friends he lost while acknowledging his luck in survival. What makes The Greatest of All Traps fly, though, is when Montana 700 embraces his Texas roots and infuses them with influences from other rap havens. “Boosie Flow” pays homage to the Louisiana legend, and “Trap Ain’t Dead” features a sample of “Top Back,” a hat-tip to Atlanta superstar T.I.
