A slow-moving locomotive of icy disquiet—that’s what powers this sonic accompaniment to the film adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ hit suburban thriller. More than anything, it’s a showcase for Elfman’s supreme adaptability. The discordant piano of “Something’s Not Right” updates his gothic playbook, the bustling synth on “3 Women” swaps out the strings, and “Memory”—a brooding hunk of post-rock—is about as far as you can get from The Simpsons theme.
