Twenty-nine years after their debut, Echo & The Bunnymen sound positively rejuvenated on The Fountain. Will Sergeant’s guitars jangle with verve: The band’s bass-driven post-punk brims with newfound urgency on “Think I Need It Too,” and “Everlasting Neverendless” adds a rousing chorus to the mix. Ian McCulloch’s smoky growl sounds as world-weary as ever, but he wears it well: On “The Idolness of Gods,” every crack in his voice lets a little more light in, bathing stately piano and gospel choir in a golden glow.
