12 Songs, 45 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Bolstered by a notoriously great Letterman performance, Future Islands’ 2014 effort Singles was a breakthrough for the synth-pop romantics. The Far Field dives further into their sound, combining the expressiveness of soul with the leanness of post-punk and New Wave, underlined by immediate songwriting and the strong, vulnerable voice of Samuel T. Herring. “I don’t believe anymore/I won’t grieve anymore,” he croons on the standout “Cave.” “’Cause what was gold/Is gone and cold.”

Through the roses!

This is an example of great songwriting. Future Islands keep kicking out great albums!

Excellent Album - 4 & 1/2 stars (rounded up because these guys are awesome)

The first two singles are hard to match in intensity- Cave is a mind numbingly deep/intense song and Ran is avery accessible song that's great for radio play. I can understand some of the criticism of the album, except I'd say that only two songs are somewhat similar (the reason why I took off half a star). The songwriting is very solid and this album is a really great progression for the band. They went back to being slightly experimental and less poppy/mainstream, and for the average Future Islands fan that's something to be very thankful for. After achieving the level of fame they did from "Singles" and the "Letterman" performance, a lot of artists don't come out the other end in this fashion.

I could listen to just this band all day

Easily my favorite band, I love their music. I like that you can always tell right away it's them you are listening to. They have a distinctive sound and all of their music is driven and powerful. I have never been to a better concert in my life either, they are unbelievable live.
