The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates (Remastered)

The Essential Daryl Hall & John Oates (Remastered)

That this collection includes the Philly duo’s six No. 1 hits—“Rich Girl,” “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do),” “Maneater," and “Out of Touch”—makes it a decent summary of their career. But the addition of several near misses (from the No. 1 slot, that is)—such as “Sara Smile,” “She’s Gone,” “Back Together Again,” “You Make My Dreams,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Did It in a Minute,” “Your Imagination,” “Family Man,” “Adult Education," and “Method of Modern Love”—makes this a comprehensive set that fans of the group should appreciate. Original album mixes are chosen over single mixes; this occasionally calls for debates (but anyone wishing for more is likely a hardcore fan who should own the studio albums as well). The collection ends with the excellent 2002 comeback single “Do It for Love,” which went to No. 1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary charts but didn't break the Hot 100 mainstream chart—reminding everyone how much pop music had changed in the ensuing years.
