15 Songs, 51 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Unrepentantly dismissive of the line between parody and reality, The Dethalbum is the debut from fictional black metal band Dethklok, stars of the Adult Swim cartoon Metalocalypse. Show creator Brendon Small describes Metalocalypse as “Spinal Tap meets Scooby Doo meets Norway.” In a never-ending search for “the brutal,” various episodes find the band in ridiculous situations that range from traveling to Mississippi to learn about the blues to trying their hand at stand-up comedy. Even though the show makes fun of the Scandivian black metal scene and its extreme obsession with death and evil, The Dethalbum, which mixes music from the cartoon with newly recorded songs, is actually a fairly convincing slice of metal. Small, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, handles the majority of singing and instrumentation himself and he clearly revels in the punishing riffs and balls-out solos that are the genre’s hallmarks. Of course, it’s the lyrics that make The Dethalbum what it is. Sung in the guttural demon voice common to all death metal, “Mermaider” (about mermaid murder) begins with the line: “There are no fingerprints deep under water / Nothing to tie one to a crime.” Other titles such as “Briefcase Full of Guts” and “Hatredcopter” speak for themselves. Like Spinal Tap before them, Dethklok lets you in on the fun regardless of whether you love black metal or just love the joke.

DO ANYTHING FOR DETHKLOK!

As said on [adult swim], this album is f@#&ing metal as metal. When scientist tried to measure how metal this album was, their instruments exploded in their hands and ripped thier souls to hell.
Enjoy mortals.

Bloody Brutal Brilliance

First of all, keep in mind that this is a FAKE BAND for a show that runs on Adult Swim, which means that most of the population will never even know it exists. The show's creator, Brendon Small, could have just realeased this in the condensed 30 second versions you see on Metalaocalypse, but he decided to go for the gusto and give us full length versions of the show's best songs. Second of all, judging this as a c.d. alone, IT ROCKS SO HARD IT ISN'T EVEN FUNNY. Seriously, this not only far surpasses the other famous fake band, Gorillaz, but it also surpasses damn near most of the REAL stuff. Buy DETHALBUM and enjoy some first rate metal - definitley one of the most amazing albums of 2007.

BRUTAL !

It's too bad I ran out of banana stickers, I had to give it stars instead. It's easy to see why Dethklok is the most brutal band EVER! Now if iTunes would only put "Dethwater" up for download. ;)
