EDITORS’ NOTES

Although Frankie Valli started recording in the early '50s and had false starts with a few different groups, it was with The Four Seasons that he finally hit the big time. Their first album was released in 1962 and featured the No. 1 smash hit "Sherry." The follow-up singles "Walk Like a Man" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" also topped the charts, and in this pre-Beatles era, The Four Seasons found themselves among the most popular and successful groups in America. More modest hits would follow, but changing tastes and psychedelic sounds soon relegated them to the past. Yet the best-of collection The Four Seasons Story appeared in the mid-'70s and sold more than a million copies; shortly afterward, they would release their last No. 1 song, "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)." This outstanding compilation includes all the signature tracks from both The Four Seasons and Valli's solo career, including "Can't Take My Eyes off You" and "Grease," plus lesser-known late-career standouts like "My Eyes Adored You" and the supremely funky "Swearin' to God."
