Editors’ Notes A somber mood prevails throughout this album, as the songs repeatedly generate slouching tempos and moaning bass tones. The drum programming consists mainly of hard clicks and taps paired with low notes so taut and rotund that they sometimes sound like the beating of hand drums more than bass notes. “Immobile” exemplifies Jonwayne’s style: he finds the middle ground between the swaying beats of hip-hop producer J Dilla and the synth washes of an electronic outfit like Boards of Canada. Somewhere in there the listener may also hear hints of Prince, if only in the tracks’ idiosyncratic funkiness and internalized creative vision.
