

Miles Davis first plugged in and turned fans on to psychedelic rock in the late ‘60s, but the trumpeter’s exploratory vision during his fusion period is hard to track. Archival sets unpack the processes behind his fiery playing, and by presenting a concert residency—parts of which were released on the LP Live-Evil—this album shows Miles’ electric ensemble stretching the materials. Each night’s take on the funk opus “What I Say” reveals a new tempo and fresh forms of lyricism.
