The Brown Study Remixes

The Brown Study Remixes

Following up 2010's excellent Brown Study album, Boog Brown returns with a new batch of remixes. Here she offers fans 11 tracks with reinvented music to support her always-on-point lyricism. While the original version was produced entirely by Michigan beat wizard Apollo Brown, these joints come from a wide array of underground maestros, including Georgia Anne Muldrow, Audible Doctor, Nick Tha 1Da, and 14KT. Most are on the mellow boom-bap tip, and they benefit from diverse styles; electronic meandering, nontraditional drum patterns, and dreamy sound effects all come into play. Despite the varied approaches, this comes off as a cohesive package, with Boog's higher-level wordplay keeping it all together. Standouts include Def Dee's Madlib-esque "Blink," the intergalactic funk of "Growth," Dunc of DTMD's take on "Ups," and Amdex's watery, bass-driven "Friends Like These," featuring North Carolina favorite Kam Moye.
