139 Songs, 6 Hours 33 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

It took 46 years to happen, but the Holy Grail of music bootlegs was finally officially issued completely and as originally recorded. Modern remastering has brought out the best in these primitive recordings made on 7-inch reel-to-reel tapes, primarily in the basement of a house in West Saugerties, N.Y., called Big Pink. Intended for publishing purposes and for fun, these tapes capture Bob Dylan and The Band from March 1967 to as late as 1968 as they work through new songs and covers of classic folk, country, blues, and gospel, inadvertently jumpstarting the entire alt.country movement. It’s an essential 139-track celebration of American music.

Amazing. Sonically limited, but amazing.

This is a simply incredible collection. I’ve often described my favorite style of music as “folks sitting in a room, and the noises they make together” - and I don’t know if there is another recording that better fits this description. If you’ve loved Dylan and/or The Band, you NEED this set. You want the roots of Music From Big Pink and The Band? Here it is.

Novices be warned, however, this was literally recorded in various rooms in houses in upstate New York, in 1967, and that’s what it sounds like. Anyone expecting this to sound like Sgt. Pepper, or any modern recording, will be disappointed. These recordings were never meant to be commercially released, and despite being the highest possible fidelity, the sonics are definitely limited. Anyone who can get past that limitation, however, will be rewarded with some of the most magical moments ever committed to tape. If you’ve ever dreamed of being a fly on the wall for some of the most important sessions in American music history, your dream just came true.

Peerless

This music has no true antecedent and is without equal. It exists beyond the reach of classification, a kingdom unto itself. Boundless and jubilant. A list of highlights would easily extend beyond a hundred tracks. [PS--The abridged "Raw" version collects the most listener-ready tracks, but it skips many, many essentials.]
