Editors’ Notes The Deep Purple of 1968 sat between the extremes of psychedelia, proto-hard rock, and prog. While “Listen, Learn, Read On” and the sober sonic explorations “Shield” and “Anthem” push the band into hard psych, “Wring That Neck” is a kaleidoscopic blues jam—a battle between guitar and organ—and “Kentucky Woman” is a freakbeat soul groove. Their extended cover of “River Deep, Mountain High” has the monolithic weight of prog but never loses the giddy funk of the original.
