10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

On The Balance, the chief architect of the Cape jazz sound revisits songs from his storied catalogue, breathing new air into them for 2019. They teem with compositional genius, and are interpreted by a long-standing band—his Ekaya septet—that lends them gravitas. Abdullah revisits his Sotho Blue fable “Nisa”, and blends ghoema with jive on “Jabula”. “Tuang Guru” nods to the great maulana and Afrikaans-language pioneer, and "Song for Sathima" is a love letter to his late wife, vocalist and composer, Sathima Bea-Benjamin. The epistemic Jazz Epistle’s still got the chops, and still has a lot to say.
