34 Songs, 2 Hours 10 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

A two-hour concept album about creative musicians battling institutional enforcement of electronic cacophony in the year 2285, The Astonishing tones down Dream Theater’s super-musicianly dexterity somewhat in service of its plot. Emphasis goes to piano parts, jazz touches, classical choirs, and orchestral arias such as the one in “Act of Faythe.” But amid all the multicharacter rock opera, riff-shredders like “Our New World” still connect on their own, while “When Your Time Has Come” works as a miniature version of the whole project.

Incredible

I was terrified when I heard Dream Theater was doing a 2.5 hour rock opera. The sheer length left so much in question for me in terms of the album’s potential. Could they fill 2.5 hours on this Game of Thrones-ish themed album without falling into redundancy? Let me assure you they came through in every way. I haven’t loved the last few Dream Theater albums right away, they had to grow on me. In the first pass I am reduced to tears. Its amazing! My faith in DT has been restored forevermore. An instant prog classic. Good job guys! Sorry my faith had wavered over the years, but you came through! A must buy!

When the light of my existence,
was slipping through my hands,
Pride and ignorance receded,
to reveal a humbled man.

Beautiful.

That Six Degrees Vibe

It’s difficult to pick a favorite Dream Theater album, bit Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence definitely ranks up there. Gift of Music definitely has the Six Degrees vibe. I’m already loving the sound of this album.
