10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The Venus 3—Peter Buck of R.E.M., Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows, and Bill Rieflin of Ministry—form an intuitive foil for Robyn Hitchcock's never-ending stream of superior pop melodies and surrealist lyrics. Hitch’s prolific nature makes his catalog a daunting endeavor. Propellor Time, mostly recorded in 2006 and polished up for release in 2010, contains several songs that appear elsewhere in different form and features guests such as Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, The Smiths' Johnny Marr, and Nick Lowe. The jangle, the harmonies, and Hitchcock's rich vocal timbre bring his music to electric life. Somber psychedelic offerings and joyful pop unite.

Robyn Hitchcock is a treasure!

Check out the song Luckiness. It's happy, but not without the edge of creepiness I've loved Robyn Hitchcock for since I was a teenager having my mind blown by Queen Elvis (where is that album these days? so glad I still have my CD of it because it seems to be out of print).

I look forward to getting to know this album, too. I saw Robyn Hitchcock in concert last night and it was a fantastic introduction to these new songs.

For those of you who don't know, RH has been around for like - ever. But he's still so fresh and interesting and challenging and beautiful and clever. How long is forever? His first band influenced REM and folks who you THOUGHT have been around forever, but he's been around forever ever.

If you ever ever get a chance to see him live, do. Like I said, I saw him last night (first time) and I think I want to do that every night from now on.

As Good A Place To Start As Any

Robyn Hitchcock writes wonderfully quirky, extremely catchy, sometimes dark, sometimes funny songs. When you include his work with The Soft Boys, he's been at this job for a very long time. As a result, his catalog is quite extensive. This brand new album is as good a place to start as any.

That tells you how talented this man is. Still making great, engaging rock music 30+ years down the line. His songwriting remains wonderful and he's picked up a phenomenal band along the way - Peter Buck, Bill Rieflin and Scott McCaughey to name the primaries.

Buy this record. You won't be sorry. I'm especially fond of "Sickie Boy" and "Evolve."
