In December 2021, JYP Entertainment and Studio J debuted Xdinary Heroes—the K-pop sextet vocal group of Gunil, Jungsu, Gaon, O.de, Jun Han, and Jooyeon—with one objective in mind. They were here to tell a generation of misfits that they, too, are extraordinary heroes, so why not have some fun? It’s a simple enough concept, amplified by Xdinary Heroes’ debut single, “Happy Death Day,” arguably the hardest-hitting anthemic emo rock heard from a K-pop idol group, well, ever. Now, with the release of their debut mini album, Xdinary Heroes are capitalizing on that intrigue: “Test Me” could double as theme music to an aughts Nickelodeon animated series—gang chants, razor-sharp guitar solos, hip-hop detours. “Sucker Punch!” is synthy, asymmetrical pop punk; in moments, it sounds like a lost cut from My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days era. At the end of the six tracks, the instrumentals from “Test Me” return—the perfect coda, the moment the curtain draws.
