EDITORS’ NOTES

Produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, the fourth album from Kentucky rockers Cage the Elephant plays like a love letter to the late '60s, mixing scuzzy textures with pretty hooks and Stooges-level sleaze with Beatles-level poise. Less edgy but more darkly introspective than their early work, Pretty turns the band’s outward aggression in, spinning bleak stories about domestic violence (“Punchin’ Bag”) and missing people (“Sweetie Little Jean”) through the frayed, frail, and ferocious vocals of Matt Shultz.

The single is okay

Mess around will be a decent radio hit but I feel it lacks the character of Cage the Elephant that I've grown to love over the years. I hope the rest of the album succeeds in that and while I love the black keys, I don't like that Dan Auerbach has changed their sound to be a lot like them. Still love Cage!!!

-Update- Mess Around has really grown on me. Though it still has black keys influence, I can tell it's definitely a Cage song. Great job Cage, still my favorite band.

bands change their sound

the arctic monkeys changed, the kooks changed, and even the Beatles changed. get over yourselves and love CTE for who they are.
