14 Songs, 38 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The Jesus and Mary Chain’s 1985 debut juxtaposes gnarly feedback and dissonance against crafty pop melody, taking cues from The Velvet Underground, Ramones, Suicide, and ’60s girl groups. Randy sing-along opener “Just Like Honey” sets a fuzzed-out, relentless tone, while the delirious and dreamy “Cut Dead” could be anyone’s soundtrack to unyielding rainy days. Happy downer “Taste the Floor” says stars don’t shine, and album finale “It’s So Hard” is a life lesson aptly drenched in echo and distortion.

Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

And still

Sounds as beautiful today as it did 20 years ago. Once my mother walked up behind me while I was listening to it full volume on headphones. Tapped my shoulder and asked, "Have you been listening to a record of bacon frying?"

Okay, this is one of the greatest of all indie rock albums!

Anyone interested in post punk pop must get this. But be careful this music will make you crazy... in a very subtle and fierce way- seriously. With that being said; drink a bottle of scotch, break up with your girlfriend/boyfriend, grab your mates, tear up and then burn down the town to this album. Then, wake up, get rid of it and change your life for the better- cheers!

Lush and Rich Guitar Pop

Lyrics on love, both gained and lost, hidden in a forest of lush guitars and deep vocals. The J&M Chain's signature guitar sound drives each of these songs as they reverberate in your ears. Not-so-obvious lyrics please those who enjoy being intellectually challenged in their music. Psychocandy is the essential J&M Chain album to start your collection with.
