Editors’ Notes Tan Dun is one of those rare composers who brings together the language and aesthetics of East and West to forge a powerful musical language. Here, with the Oslo Philharmonic and the impressively assured Eldbjørg Hemsing, he oversees two of his violin concertos. “Fire Ritual,” written for Hemsing, is a memorial to victims of war and veers between writing of powerful lyricism and barely controlled anger. “Rhapsody & Fantasia” has a long history, evolving from an earlier concerto to its present form. Again, it is written wonderfully for the violin, its timeless message evoked with real beauty.
